The Avalanche-based game, Off the Grid, is now available for users on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X and S, and, because why not, the Epic Games Store on PC.

Off the Grid is a battle royale shooter game by Gunzilla Games and runs on its own Avalanche L1 subnet, GUNZ.

In the game, players are dropped into a reality show-style setting where they must fight to survive in large immersive online matches.

You might get a striking aura of similarity between Off the Grid and other popular battle royale games like Apex Legends, Fortnite, and PUBG, however, the blockchain-based game does bring its own unique twists to the genre.

Off the Grid allows players to customize their characters with robotic limbs and swap them out mid-match, gaining new abilities and adapting new strategies on the fly.

The other fun thing about this game is the blockchain features.

Players can mint rare weapons and items as NFTs, which you can trade or sell if you’re into that kind of thing.

The in-game economy is built around the GUN token,  a cryptocurrency designed as the in-game currency, powering the economy on Off the Grid by allowing players to trade, sell, and purchase NFTs such as rare weapons, items, or other digital assets.

Off the Grid’s native cryptocurrency: The GUN Token

Built on the Avalanche blockchain, GUN token aims to bring a decentralized layer to the gaming experience, letting players own and exchange their in-game assets more freely on a secondary marketplace outside the confines of the game.

Off the Grid’s early access or beta version is a preview of the official release’ experience that aims to provide a playable glimpse of the final product.

Some of the features on the game includea large city map and a 60-player mode called "Extraction Royale," where squads of three players compete to be the last team standing.

A big question that's been floating around about Off the Grid is how it plans to integrate crypto on consoles, especially since Sony and Microsoft haven't embraced blockchain games yet. Their game plan is not entirely clear but that remains something for players to speculate over the upcoming days.

However, the early access version on PlayStation 5 features in-game items priced in GUN tokens. You can earn GUN by completing missions, but there's currently no visible option to buy additional GUN within the game.

The real GUN token hasn’t gone live on the Avalanche mainnet yet, so that kind of integration isn’t in the game for now. However, a testnet version of the token was used during earlier playtests.

Nonetheless, Off the Grid will deliver 60 hours of deeply immersive narrative-driven gameplay, blending a battle royale experience with a stronger cinematic story than most in the genre. Gunzilla Games, the studio behind it, was co-founded by film director Neill Blomkamp.
