From the earliest days of human evolution through all the periods that have come after, humans have developed and discovered all forms of technology. Human history has not been short of incredible inventions, from striking two stones to make a fire to the super helpful wheel to the lightbulb. But it is safe to say that no other form of technology has been so widely adopted as fast and easily as Artificial Intelligence

Relatively esoteric just a few years ago, everybody now knows about AI, from your kindergartner to your grandparents. And what’s amazing about AI is that it keeps developing. From chatbots to video and even music generators, it seems AI does everything these days, and that’s what we’re going to look at in this article.

The Rise of Advanced AI Models

If you think back just a few years, you might not have heard of AI, but the technology has been in existence for a long time. If you’re under the age of 68, AI is older than you are. AI has been in development as a field since 1956. It was first established at the Dartmouth Conference of 1956, and ever since then, it has been developed quietly until it eventually “blew up” to use the most appropriate term.

While AI was publicized in 1956, the first real contact the general public had with the technology was on March 27th, 2023, when a viral video of popular actor Will Smith eating spaghetti went viral. At the time, the video seemed so bad and unrealistic, but fast-forward to now, and we have AI that is far more advanced than that.

Big tech companies and startups have developed all forms of advanced AI models, from LLMs to AGIs, s fand it doesn’t seem like the AI race will stop any time soon. We’ve now seen AI being used in all kinds of industrial applications, from agriculture to even stock markets, and it keeps getting better, bigger, and more real. So, in progress, let’s look at some of the best AI advancements 2024 has to offer.

Sora: Revolutionizing AI Video Generation

Sora broke the internet earlier this year when top AI company OpenAI released a compilation of videos created by their newest video generation model that just looked too real to be, well, real. Now, they have big updates.

The AI giant broke the news of a new version of Sora–Sora Turbo– which they say is significantly faster than the model previewed earlier in the year. But speed is not the only thing about this version of the Sora AI model. The new version reportedly allows users to generate videos of up to 1080p resolution and up to 20 seconds long. Users can also choose dynamic aspect ratios such as widescreen, vertical, or square.

If you don’t want all your content generated, Sora Turbo lets you bring your assets into the mix to extend, remix, or blend the video to your perfect taste. And well, there’s always the prompt option if you’re more into generating the whole thing from text.

Speaking of prompting, Sora Turbo has new interfaces to make prompting easier on the new model. There’s also a new storyboard tool that gives you more control over your output by allowing users to specify inputs precisely per frame!

We don’t know about you, but that all sounds wonderful. Now, let’s talk costs. If you are a ChatGPT plus user, fear not—Sora comes with that package for up to 50 480p videos or less for 720p per month.

For the Oliver Twists that ask for more, there’s a pro plan that includes 10x more usage at higher resolutions and longer durations.

But hold your horses! Before you go on creating your universe with Sora Turbo, Open AI has admitted that even the Turbo version has its limitations. The model, apparently, still generates unrealistic physics and struggles with complex actions over long durations.

It might take a while longer to make it perfect, but it’s a big step in the right direction of creating dynamic and powerful AI video generation tools.

Character.ai: Enhancing Conversational AI Experiences

We all know about chatbots and AI tools for creators that work wonders in specific fields and industries, but Character AI brings one heck of a use case to AI chatbots.

If you’ve wondered what it would be like to talk about your favorite historical heroes or pop culture icons, you don’t have to wonder anymore because character.ai lets you do just that.

Character.ai is a free-to-use AI site that uses a neutral language model to read large amounts of text data and respond to prompts using that data. Conversational AI platforms give users creative powers, allowing them to create a character on the site, whether real or made up, dead or alive.

This means you can finally ask Isaac Newton about the apple that fell on his head when he discovered the law of gravity or ask Billie Eilish where we all go when we fall asleep. There is also a group mode if you want to talk to multiple characters at once. So you can finally interview all four great artists from the Renaissance period in Italy and have them answer each other.

There’s a text-to-speech option available if you want to hear the characters speak back to you in their voices. Creating a character is as easy as clicking the “Create” button on the site’s homepage and then selecting “Create a character.” You can give the character any name you want, and then you’ll get a short greeting from your character.

The Character.ai chatbot is free for all to use, but it also offers a premium offering called c.ai+, which comes with added perks aside from the basic features the free version offers. With the premium version, you can get features like priority access to chats, faster response times from characters, and even early access to new features. Character.ai doesn’t just let your imagination run wild; it brings your imagination to life.

GenCast: AI-Powered Weather Forecasting Revolution

As climate change fuels extreme weather, precise forecasts are vital. GenCast, an advanced AI model, delivers accurate predictions up to 15 days ahead, outperforming traditional systems like ECMWF’s ENS.

Unlike single-scenario forecasts, GenCast uses ensemble forecasting to present multiple potential weather outcomes, offering a fuller picture of uncertainties. Trained on 40+ years of global weather data, it excels in predicting extreme events like cyclones and heatwaves, enabling better decision-making.

GenCast’s efficiency shines: it generates forecasts in just eight minutes using Google Cloud TPUs, versus hours on supercomputers. Open-sourced to foster collaboration, GenCast is a game-changer for weather prediction, aiding disaster response, energy planning, and climate resilience.

AlphaFold 3: Breakthroughs in Protein Structure Prediction

So, podcasters have their own AI now, but what about scientists, medical researchers, biochemistry researchers, and all the science folks in that line? Where’s their own AI? Thanks to the incredible partnership between Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs, all those folks got their AI in AlphaFold 3, one of the best AI models for research.

As impressive as that may already sound, AlphaFold 3 protein prediction can predict the structure and interactions of all life’s molecules with unprecedented accuracy. The Keyword here is “all life,” which means everything alive, from your everyday human being to the tiniest ant.

This protein structure prediction AI model has already doubled prediction accuracy compared with previous models. Google reports that “For the interactions of proteins with other molecule types, we see at least a 50% improvement compared with existing prediction methods.”

According to Google, the kind of experimental protein structure AlphaFold 3 does usually takes the length of a PhD and costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. The company already estimates that the previous version of AlphaFold has already saved humanity time worth hundreds of millions of researcher-years with what’s already been discovered with the model and at the current rate of experimental structure biology.

The AlphaFold Server is free to access for scientists and people who fancy themselves as scientists doing non-commercial research. With just a few clicks, any biologist anywhere in the world would be able to harness the power of an AI model. It’s science, not just any science, advanced science at our fingertips.

Nova: The Next Step in AI Innovation

You may think we already have videos covered with OpenAI’s Sora, but Nova takes it to a whole “Nova” level. This new, innovative AI video tool lets you do more than create videos. It comes with a whole bunch of other neat video editing features, and they’re all AI-powered.

Starting with one really helpful video tool, subtitles. Nova brings subtitles to a different level of ease, allowing users to automatically generate subtitles, hardcode them to videos, and even download the subtitle files in either SRT, VTT, or TXT files.

The Nova AI platform also comes with a convenient text-to-speech generator that allows users to generate high-quality voiceovers in both male and female voices. If you’re looking to resize your videos to fit social media resolution requirements, Nova is built with a resizing tool that will do absolute justice tool to that.

Want to merge multiple video clips and save it as a single video? Yeah, you can do that with Nova’s video merger. Thinking of translating your social media videos, movies, courses, and more into other languages? Nova’s got an audio dubbing tool that lets you do just that.

Need some stock? Nova’s got lots of it. Through a partnership with iStock, Nova’s AI tool also gives users access to thousands of stock videos and images, as well as royalty-free audio right from the AI tool itself.

There’s so much Nova can do when it comes to editing video. It’s a Swiss army knife for video editors.

Artificial Intelligence is proving to be one of the most important technological inventions. The tool has become incredibly helpful and useful in so many aspects of humanity, from companionship to content creation to scientific discovery. And while one of the most astonishing things about AI is the way it’s been adopted so rapidly by the public, the rate at which AI is also being developed is worth mentioning.

According to a report on Medium published on the 16th of January 2024, there are currently more than 5000 different AI models worldwide. This is a huge improvement from the 1,800 models recorded in a report by Atlas AI in 2020. With all the new developments we’re seeing in AI, it has become clear that Artificial Intelligence has come to stay among us. They are not perfect yet; they still make mistakes here and there, but there’s no denying that they’ve impacted our lives in so many ways, and we can’t wait to see the next-generation AI technologies and what the future of artificial intelligence holds.
