Mark Zuckerberg is known for many things and has many faces. To most, he is the genius wonderkid who invented Facebook, the social networking platform that completely changed our lives and how we interact. To others, he is the man behind huge user data thefts from his hit invention, Facebook.

It is safe to say that Mark Zuckerberg’s credibility, or at least Meta’s credibility, dropped by about a billion points after the European Union fined Meta £1.2 billion for mishandling user data. But it seems Mark has left that in the past and hopes to make a new, more credible mark in the world.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg has announced his intention to fully support open-source Artificial intelligence, just as he released his company’s latest AI model, Llama 3.1, to the world.
Zuckerberg has called open-source AI a new “path forward” for the AI industry. On July 23, Zuckerberg also said that Meta was already “taking the next steps toward open source AI becoming the industry standard” with the release of Llama 3.1, which he calls the first “frontier-level open-source AI model.”
Mark is very proud to present Llama 3.2 to the world, and considering its capabilities, it is an impressive release.
The newly released model can understand and converse in multiple languages, write high-quality code, and solve complex math problems super fast.
The new model has 405 billion parameters, the highest number in any Meta AI model. Although ChatGPT has one trillion parameters, Llama is not doing badly and is top-level among other AI competitors.
Whether or not it is an effort at rebranding, Mark is hammering down on his commitment to transparency. After mentioning that he wants to make future Llama models the most advanced in the industry, he subtly chipped in that even right now, Llama is “already leading on openness, modifiability and cost efficiency.”
Going harder on transparency, he declared that “Meta is committed to open source AI.” However, transparency talk aside, according to Mark, Llama has some advantages. Apparently, its advantages include customization, independence from closed vendors, data protection, and cost-efficiency benefits for developers.
The proud father of the new open-source model, confident about the future dominance of open-source AI models over closed-source ones, also compared their relationship with the evolution of open-source software Linux from Unix, which was initially closed-source. Say what you want, but the man sure knows how to make examples.

Whether Meta’s new model will be successful remains to be seen. Mark and Meta are making every effort to regain user confidence and leave behind their past sins and massive data breaches. However, it is easier to forgive than to forget. Meta’s new model looks exciting, but everyone will be monitoring it closely.
