In a bold move, President Donald Trump just put his signature on a bill that makes nonconsensual AI-generated deepfake porn a federal crime. Yep, if someone cooks up fake, intimate AI images of you without permission, they’re now in serious trouble, and websites have just 48 hours to yank that nonsense off their platforms.
Dubbed the TAKE IT DOWN Act (because who doesn’t love a catchy acronym?), this law, signed on May 19, means posting or even threatening to post these creepy deepfakes can land you fines or jail time. Melania Trump, who championed this cause, called it a “national victory,” warning that AI and social media might be the digital candy kids can’t resist, but unlike sugar, these tech tricks can mess with minds and emotions in deadly ways.

Why the Rush? Deepfake Drama and a Growing Problem
The bill, cooked up by Senators Ted Cruz and Amy Klobuchar in June 2024, passed Congress earlier this year. It’s America’s latest step joining countries like the UK, which already outlawed deepfake porn in 2023 under their Online Safety Act.
Why now? Because deepfake porn isn’t just a creepy fantasy anymore. A January 2024 scandal involving fake Taylor Swift images blowing up on X pushed lawmakers to act fast. A report from 2023 shows 99% of deepfake porn victims are women, revealing a nasty trend that’s finally getting the legal smackdown.
