The most eccentric billionaire of our time, who’s vowed to settle a colony on Mars within 10 years, is still hard at work here on Earth. Recently, Tesla recently rolled out a summary of it`s roadmap, and here are the wonders that await the pioneers:

Tesla Inc. plans to launch an advanced driver assistance system, what it proudly calls Full-Self Driving (FSD), in China and Europe during the first quarter of next year, pending regulatory approval.

It has made serious strides in China, clearing data security checks and inking a mapping and navigation deal with tech giant Baidu Inc. The company has received authorization to conduct FSD technology trials on Shanghai's roads.

But, judging by the cryptic hints in Tesla’s roadmap, a full-scale launch won’t happen until at least Q1 of 2025.

The Future of Driving

September 2024 is shaping up to be a game-changer for Tesla’s Full-Self Driving (FSD) system. Here’s a peek at what’s coming:

  • v12.5.2 with ~3x fewer – this update means fewer panic grabs for the wheel—your Tesla is getting a whole lot better at handling things solo.
  • And again on v12.5.2 on the AI3 computer –  Tesla’s bringing unity to the AI3 and AI4 computers, making sure both old and new hardware play nice with the latest self-driving software.
  • Actually Smart Summon – this time, your car won’t just wander in your general direction — it’ll find you exactly where you are.
  • Cybertruck Autopark - no more sweating over squeezing that tank into tight spaces. Just step out, let it handle the rest.
  • Eye-tracking with sunglasses - now your car will keep an eye on your eyes—even through the cool shades.
  • End-to-End network on the highway - imagine a smooth ride where your car effortlessly navigates from on-ramps to off-ramps without needing you to poke the steering wheel.
  • Cybertruck FSD - Cybertruck now got a self-driving brain that’s totally in sync with its beefy exterior.

Elon Musk is also hoping that right-hand drive Teslas will roll out by the end of the first quarter, or worst case, early in the second. Keep the fingers crossed!

Avoid Crashes, or Tesla Will Blame You

Despite all the cutting-edge tech, it’s still not the time to fully trust AI to handle your driving. Even Tesla says so, strongly advising drivers to keep their hands on the wheel and their eyes on the road when using the software.

There have been incidents where Tesla customers used driver-assist features and ended up in crashes — some tragically fatal — and Tesla pointed fingers at the drivers, citing the multiple warnings they provided.

Keep in mind that FSD isn’t perfect, especially when dealing with pedestrians, cyclists, and other road users. It can struggle with certain turns, construction zones, and narrow, winding roads. Drivers might need to step in to avoid trailers, cargo sticking out of vehicles, or even random debris on the road.

So while the dream of sipping lattes on Mars is still a few years away, at least we’ll be cruising through Earth’s traffic jams with Cybertrucks that park themselves and keep an eye on us through our sunglasses.
