Since AI has come around, it has been one of the best and most helpful technological advancements in humanity's history. However, this has not stopped it from being a controversial topic. Some people think AI will be the best thing to happen to humanity, while others think it will be humanity’s doom. Tesla CEO Elon Musk has shared his views on the matter.

Elon Musk predicted that we might be heading to a future where humans will no longer be part of the workforce. When this happens, humans will have to find other ways to give their lives purpose.

The owner of X voiced his concern during a panel discussion at the 2024 All-In Summit hosted by the All-In Podcast. Musk said he foresees a future without a human workforce. According to him, a likely issue that will arise in the future is “how do we find meaning in a world where AI can do everything we can do, but better?”

Noting just how powerful computers have become, Elon Musk said that the Turing test, once used as a benchmark to measure how convincingly a computer could emulate human conversation, is no longer relevant.

He said he knew more and more retired people at this point. While he believes they enjoy being retired, he believes there will eventually be some crisis of meaning caused by the obvious fact that the computer can do everything humans can, but even better.

But it’s not just AI that Elon Musk is worried about. He also believes this shift will be aided by the rise of autonomous cars and humanoid robots. According to him, the development of these emerging technologies could infinitely increase economic growth and productivity.

Elon Musk discussed the development of the Optimus robot that his company, Tesla, is building. He said the company has learned much about the human body, how it works, and the reason for its shape. He also touched on the shape of the fingers and thumb, which he believes will guide future developments of Optimus.

Even though the Optimus hand is already a powerful robot, Musk noted that it is still very limited compared to a human hand. According to him, the Optimus hand has only 11 degrees of freedom while a human hand has roughly 25.

He announced that the next version of the Optimus hand will have 22 degrees of freedom, almost as capable as a human hand. Tesla and Elon Musk are in direct competition with other rival robotics developers, including Figure AI, MEta, Nvidia, Mercedes Benz, and others, so the future Elon speaks of may not be too far ahead.

Musk has also mentioned a very high likelihood of AI-powered humanoid robots built for home and business outnumbering humans someday. Will that happen? We can only wait and watch.
