Everyone knows AI is everywhere now. It has been implemented in different sectors, fields, and processes. The technology has seen increased adoption over the years, and it’s even about to get adopted in the one place nobody thought it could be adopted–the government.
Eccentric billionaire and CEO of Meta (formerly Facebook) Mark Zuckerberg recently announced that no one saw this phase coming, not even from miles away. During his opening remarks for Meta’s Q3 earnings call on Wednesday, October 30, Zuckerberg announced that Meta is “working with the public sector to adopt Llama across the US government.”

Besides catching almost everyone unaware, the announcement also raises some important questions. First of all, will the entire US government be using Llama or just some parts of it? What exactly is the model going to be used for? Does the partnership extend to the military? And, of course, how much is Meta making out of this?
Elaborating on the announcement, Meta’s spokesperson Faith Eischen stated that Meta is in partnership with the US government, and the partnership was formed to use Llama to address different challenges in the government’s duties.
Areas mentioned include increasing access to safe water, providing reliable electricity, and helping small businesses. The Department of Education was also mentioned among the beneficiaries of this partnership as the government looks towards using AI to simplify financial aid processes for students. Eischen, however, noted that Meta is also in discussions with other government sectors to see how Llama can be used. Eischen also emphasized that the partnership involved “no payment.”
The potential benefits of this partnership are immense, and it is also an interesting time for it to be announced. Donald Trump, one of the prominent electoral candidates in the upcoming US election, very recently threatened to imprison Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg has also tried to distance himself and Meta’s products from politics.
Other AI companies have also been in talks with the government. OpenAI and Anthropic also recently said they are willing to collaborate with the government by sharing their models with the US AI Safety Institute before safety screening.
There’s also Google’s well-known off-and-on dance with the Pentagon.
Open AI also recently announced that DARPA, the U.S. Agency for International Development, and the Los Alamos National Laboratory have already put some of its models to work.
But the government partnership aside, Zuckerberg also mentioned the next Llama model. According to his statement, the newer model is training on a cluster bigger than anything being used by other competing companies. He said he expects the AI to show “new modalities,” “stronger reasoning,” and “much faster” when it eventually debuts next year.
