Since crypto and blockchain surfaced, humans have been the driving force behind the technology. They have served as caretakers, creating the entire ecosystem, maintaining, and trading on it. However, recent events suggest we may not be at the helm for much longer. Something else might take our place but what could that be?
Crypto experts, key industry builders, and investors predict that we might be heading into a future where humans cease to dominate blockchain networks and AI agents instead take over humanity’s long-held place.
NVIDIA’s appearance on AI at CES 2025 came with announcements that were nothing short of groundbreaking. These announcements have set the crypto industry abuzz with ideas of a radical shift coming to the crypto world.
These crypto builders all seem to be sure of this incoming future. However, none of them can agree on how we’ll arrive at that future and what it will mean for everyone else.
Speaking on this issue, Evan, an ecosystem lead at Monad and former McKinsey analyst, took to an X post to say, "We will see a billion agents on-chain before we see a billion humans on-chain."
He then explained his rationale for holding this belief: "Crypto has inherently unfriendly UX for human users. Agents do not care about this friction."
These predictions of an AI-led blockchain future are not unfounded. We have begun to see a surge in AI agent development specifically for crypto, and companies in this line of service, such as Virtuals, are already recording impressive numbers. Virtuals itself has recorded $60 million in revenue.
In that same vein, crypto’s latest meta has seen certain assets from projects such as AI16z surge as demand for AI agent tokens also surge.

Some industry leaders are already envisioning what the future may look like with AI agents. Hareb Qureshi, Managing Director at Dragonfly Capital, believes that with this technology, "instead of having to raise millions of dollars," developers could "launch an application with $10,000 of AI cloud computing."
One advantage of this system is that it gives some democracy to those who can build and deploy blockchain apps, which, according to Qureshi, could "lead to an on-chain renaissance. "
However, it has also been pointed out that the implications of this future extend well past cost efficiency. As with many things about AI, there are ethical questions and issues of authentication and trust in digital interactions. In Qureshi’s words, "chatbots will start hiding that they are AIs" and "pass as humans."
He also noted that even as of this moment, most current "AI agents" in crypto aren't what they're supposed to be. "These things are not agents. These are chatbots with meme coins attached."
It’s another case of weighing the pros and cons. Does the cost efficiency outweigh the ethical concerns, or vice versa? Can we have both work together? As the technology develops, these experts will consider these questions.
