Artificial Intelligence is one of the best technologies in the world right now and perhaps also the most popular one. ChatGPT by OpenAI is undoubtedly the most popular AI model. Everyone, from tech workers to everyday people, has heard of it and probably even used it. It’s like the Michael Jackson of AI models.

Since Sam Altman’s OpenAI dropped the first version of its Large Language Model, we have seen CHAT-GPT go from strength to strength. From only being able to answer a few random questions for high-school assignments, it is now able to talk and respond with a decent human voice and tone, with the last version released.

Sam Altman’s company seems to be working at full efficiency. They have now dropped a new lightweight, super fast, and super capable version of their beloved ChatGPT. Not that anyone’s complaining, but Altman is really not letting us catch our breaths with these releases.

The latest version of ChatGPT, ‘GPT-4o mini', is the latest iteration of the world-famous AI model. OpenAI announced the launch on July 18, and the model was introduced as more cost-effective than all the other versions of ChatGPT.

Usually, when companies release “cost-effective” versions of their products, they are not very effective or at least not as effective as the original version. We’ve had many “Lite” and “mini” versions of different software and apps that have not aged quite well.

However, OpenAI has promised that their new model's tradeoff between power and performance is “minimal” even with its much smaller energy consumption footprint. And for anyone thinking that’s just another thing companies say to make people use their products, it seems OpenAI is telling the truth.

According to the company, GPT-4o mini scored 82% on the MMLU benchmark and even beat GPT-41 on the LMSYS leaderboard for chat preferences. Basically, you may want to hold off on underestimating the mini ChatGPT. It’s pretty good; some might even call it “small but mighty.”

GPT-4o mini has many of the same functions as the previous version except for audio and video, so it’s limited to only text and vision for the time being. OpenAI has, however, promised that it will soon have audio and video support.

One of the most asked questions about new technologies is how beneficial they are to the environment. But our environment-conscious will have to be patient for now because OpenAI has not mentioned whether the new model has any environmental benefits over the previous models.

OpenAI has also yet to tell us the methodology the new model uses to reduce running costs. There’s still quite a bit we don’t know about this new model. But one thing we do know is that conspiracy theorists will come out and say this is the AI that wipes humanity off. Well, to each their own, right?
