OpenAI has officially launched GPT-4.5, its newest and most expansive AI language model. Initially available as a research preview for ChatGPT Pro users, the model promises improved writing abilities, enhanced world knowledge, and a more refined conversational experience. Despite these advancements, OpenAI has made it clear that GPT-4.5 is not a "frontier model" and may not outperform some of its previous releases in certain areas.
What’s New with GPT-4.5?
OpenAI describes GPT-4.5 as its most "knowledgeable" model to date, with stronger pattern recognition and improved reasoning capabilities. According to the company, users will notice a more natural interaction style, making the model a better fit for tasks like writing, programming, and solving practical problems. Additionally, OpenAI highlights the model’s emotional intelligence, suggesting that conversations will feel warmer, more intuitive, and emotionally nuanced.
One of the most significant improvements is the reduction in hallucinations compared to GPT-4o. While the model still isn’t perfect, OpenAI claims it provides more reliable and accurate responses across a wide range of topics. Early user feedback suggests that GPT-4.5 is particularly strong in creative applications but may struggle with detailed step-by-step logical reasoning compared to OpenAI’s o-series models.

Despite the improvements, OpenAI has explicitly stated that GPT-4.5 does not introduce enough new capabilities to qualify as a frontier model. Leaked documents revealed that while the model enhances computational efficiency over GPT-4 by more than ten times, it does not introduce seven net-new frontier capabilities in reasoning. OpenAI later removed this mention, but the general consensus remains that GPT-4.5 is an incremental update rather than a groundbreaking leap.
Training for GPT-4.5 incorporated synthetic data from OpenAI’s o1 reasoning model, codenamed "Strawberry," alongside traditional techniques such as supervised fine-tuning (SFT) and reinforcement learning from human feedback (RLHF). This mix has led to an AI model that is more aligned with human expectations in conversation but is not necessarily a giant leap forward in reasoning capabilities.

good news: it is the first model that feels like talking to a thoughtful person to me. i have had several moments where i've sat back in my chair and been astonished at getting actually good advice from an AI.
bad news: it is a giant, expensive model. we…
The Cost of Advancements
One of the most contentious aspects of GPT-4.5 is its pricing. AI researchers and industry insiders have pointed out that access to the model costs significantly more than GPT-4o—potentially 15 to 20 times higher. Some critics argue that OpenAI is prioritizing monetization over accessibility, making cutting-edge AI available only to premium users.

While GPT-4.5 is OpenAI’s latest release, the company has already hinted at what’s next. CEO Sam Altman has confirmed that GPT-5 is expected as early as late May, integrating OpenAI’s upcoming o3 reasoning model. Unlike GPT-4.5, GPT-5 is anticipated to be a more significant leap in AI capabilities, incorporating multiple versions of OpenAI’s models to move toward artificial general intelligence (AGI).
