Elon Musk is at it again. This time, he’s trying to make history go the way he wants, and no, I’m not talking about his attempts to colonize Mars. Musk announced on Saturday that his artificial intelligence company, xAI, is retraining its AI model, Grok, with a shiny new knowledge base that’s free from, in his words, “garbage” and “uncorrected data.” I guess that means all the information that’s been "wrong" in Musk’s eyes is about to get a makeover.

Musk promised that the new Grok 3.5 model would have “advanced reasoning,” and he wants it to go all-in on rewriting the entire corpus of human knowledge. Think of it as the ultimate edit button for human history: adding in missing facts, and deleting the errors. I guess Musk is determined to "clean up" what he sees as a mess, because, obviously, there’s too much "garbage" in AI models that use unchecked data. I mean, I can’t argue with that, who likes garbage?

Musk's War on "Woke" and Political Correctness

Now, if you’re thinking this sounds like the usual Musk-style rebellion, you’re right. He’s been banging the “anti-woke” drum for years, and this Grok model is no different. Musk has long claimed that AI models like OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which he co-founded, are too biased and politically correct. He believes that these models intentionally omit information that doesn’t align with what’s deemed socially or politically acceptable. So, in classic Musk fashion, he’s attempting to flip the script and make Grok “anti-woke.” And honestly, I can’t help but think, will the world ever get enough of this “anti-woke” crusade? Apparently, we’re about to find out.

It seems Musk’s mission to rid platforms of political correctness isn't limited to AI. After taking over Twitter in 2022, he relaxed content moderation rules, which resulted in, shall we say, a delightful flood of conspiracy theories, fake news, and, well, misinformation, sometimes even from Musk himself. But hey, why not add some "Community Notes" to the platform, where users can “correct” the posts, right? Genius, I guess?

Critics Aren't Buying It

Naturally, not everyone is onboard with Musk’s latest plan to rewrite history, because, you know, some people actually care about facts. Gary Marcus, an AI startup founder, and former NYU professor, couldn’t hold back, calling Musk’s move straight out of George Orwell’s 1984. Ouch, Gary. He basically called Musk a history rewriter, but hey, Musk’s got his own views, and who needs pesky things like “facts” when you can just... edit them, right?

Other critics, like Bernardino Sassoli de’ Bianchi, a philosophy professor at the University of Milan, are equally concerned. He described Musk’s plan as “dangerous” and said that when billionaires start playing around with history, we’re no longer talking about innovation, we’re talking about narrative control. So much for the “truth,” huh? Maybe we should rename Grok to "Grok the Narrative"?

Musk's Call for "Divisive Facts"

And if you thought things couldn’t get any spicier, Musk took it one step further by asking users to share "divisive facts" to train Grok. Of course, these facts had to be “politically incorrect, but nonetheless factually true.” You know, the kind of facts that stir the pot. The replies? Let’s just say they were a goldmine for conspiracy theories, like Holocaust distortion, anti-vaccine nonsense, and all-around extremist claims. What could go wrong when you invite internet users to flood your AI model with that kind of data?

So, here we are, Musk’s latest brainchild: rewriting history through AI, all in the name of “truth.” I guess the idea is to scrub the system clean of anything that doesn’t fit his personal version of what’s true. What could possibly go wrong, right?

Let’s just hope it doesn’t turn into the world’s most expensive history revisionist tool. You decide where you stand on this one.
