Experts believe the world's first AI agents might become something we’ll witness in 2025. This assertion comes in the wake of OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, the announcement of significant progress in his company’s development of human-like artificial general intelligence (AGI)

This announcement is contained in his blog release on Jan. 6 titled “Reflection” where he mentioned that “we are now confident we know how to build AGI as we have traditionally understood it.” “We believe that, in 2025, we may see the first AI agents ‘join the workforce’ and materially change the output of companies,” he added.

Is this the beginning of the feared technological revolution where AI takes over human jobs?

Previously, many experts believed artificial intelligence could not completely replace human’s creativity, dismissing the argument of human input being less valued. But, with the development of AGIs, fresh concerns about the AI threat to the human workforce has propped up

Former congressman George Santos commented on this sentiment in reaction to Wendys using AI and laying off some of its workers in his post on X that reads:

So what are these AI agents we're talking about? For context, AI agents, often referred to as agentic AI, are artificial intelligence systems designed to operate with a degree of autonomy. These systems can comprehend intricate objectives, make independent decisions, and take actions with little to no human oversight.

Furthermore, they are capable of executing complex reasoning processes that involve multiple steps.

Another important figure in the tech space that believes AI agents will become mainstream in 2025 is Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang. He expressed his optimism about the development around AI agents in a statement he gave at the firm’s earnings call in November where he said “we’re starting to see enterprise adoption of agentic AI really is the latest rage.”

Additionally, Dario Amodei, CEO of Anthropic—creators of the Claude chatbot—predicted in November, 2024 that human-level AI could emerge as early as 2026. A post on X by popular tech critic, Tsarathustra, captured details about predictions which reads, “Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei says by 2027 AI models will cost up to $100 billion to train and will be "better than most humans at most things”.

Shedding more light on the potential impacts of these AI agents, Altman expressed his belief that “putting powerful tools in the hands of people, step by step, leads to remarkable and widely beneficial outcomes.” He emphasized that their focus is now shifting towards achieving “superintelligence in its truest form.”

“Superintelligent tools have the potential to significantly accelerate scientific discovery and innovation, surpassing our current capabilities. This could lead to unprecedented levels of abundance and prosperity,” he noted.

The launch of OpenAI’s ChatGPT chatbot has been a pivotal moment in the AI revolution, which many experts anticipate will gain significant momentum in 2025.

“We are starting to witness some of the tremendous benefits we’ve always envisioned from AI, and it’s clear that even more is on the horizon,” he remarked.
