White House AI and crypto czar David Sacks has thrown some serious cold water on the doomsday predictions that AI is about to take over massive chunks of the workforce. Sacks isn't buying into the hype. He’s confident that AI still needs human supervision to bring in the big bucks. After all, it’s still just doing the grunt work; humans manage the real processes.

His thoughts follow closely on the heels of a Microsoft report that highlighted 40 jobs most at risk of being replaced by AI. Some of these positions? Yep, they're in the crypto industry too. But here’s the kicker: Sacks believes this “AI job loss” narrative is a bit of a stretch.

According to him, AI is still firmly in the “middle management” zone, handling the repetitive tasks, while we humans still oversee the entire operation. It's like asking a robot to clean the kitchen, fine for scrubbing the floors, but it’s your call whether the kitchen stays clean.

AI is Here, But It's Not the Boss Just Yet

The Microsoft Research study that sparked this latest round of chatter came to a fairly grim conclusion for certain knowledge-based jobs. Jobs like news analysts, reporters, journalists, and even technical writers (hello, crypto industry) are apparently at risk. Customer service reps? They’re also high on the list.

Microsoft took a deep dive into 200,000 Bing Copilot chats, and their results are clear: AI excels at gathering info, writing content, and offering advice. But when it comes to high-level market research or roles where human judgment is key? Not so much.

For example, those writing and reporting jobs earned a not-so-stellar “AI applicability score” of 0.38-0.39, while the more technical data-driven roles barely scraped the bottom of the barrel with a score between 0.35-0.36.

Meanwhile, the Department of Labor reports that July only saw 73,000 new jobs added, well below the 100,000 expected. In the crypto world, things aren't looking any better: CryptoJobsList added just 38 new positions in July, while Remote3.co posted 69.

Sacks, Balaji, and the AI Job Disruption Debate

Sacks is on the same page as crypto entrepreneur Balaji Srinivasan, who has been vocal about AI’s limitations. Balaji dismissed the notion that AI is coming for everyone’s job. He argues that AI isn’t quite the independent, all-knowing force some might fear. It's still reliant on you.

As Balaji put it:

“AI doesn’t take your job; it lets you do any job.”

If AI replaces anything, it’s the older model of AI itself. Take Midjourney: it took Stable Diffusion’s job, and GPT-4 has replaced GPT-3. So, once you’ve got an AI tool in your workflow, you just upgrade to the latest model, and voilà, you’ve got the new AI doing the work that the old AI did.

In the end, AI is more like a fancy tool in your toolbox, not an employee coming for your job. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t deserve a little attention.
