The news of Donald Trump's victory in the last US presidential election has not yet died down, and the president-elect is already making the headlines again. This time, the news involves long-time Donald Trump fan and richest man in the world Elon Musk, the famous entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and a soon-to-be-created government agency aptly called DOGE.
On the night of Tuesday, November 12th, re-elected president Donald Trump released a statement that shows that Trump has appointed SpaceX boss Elon Musk and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy as the leads for the new administration’s newly formed “Department of Government Efficiency,” or DOGE, as popularly called.
Trump, in an X statement, called his selected pair “two wonderful Americans” who he believes “will pave the way for my Administration to dismantle Government Bureaucracy, slash excess regulations, cut wasteful expenditures, and restructure Federal Agencies,” as a part of his administration’s larger “Save America” movement.
The DOGE department will oversee cutting redundant government structures, reducing excess spending, reforming agencies, and tackling what the team and president-elect call "waste and fraud" within the United States' $6.5 trillion federal budget.
According to Trump's statement, DOGE aims to create a smaller and more accountable government run on principles of efficiency and entrepreneurship. In another X post, Elon Musk mentioned that all actions taken by the DOGE agency “will be posted online for maximum transparency.”
Musk also invited the public to scrutinize the agency. “Anytime the public thinks we are cutting something important or not cutting something wasteful, just let us know," he tweeted. To make things even more interesting, the X owner also mentioned that there will be a leaderboard for the “most insanely dumb spending of your tax dollars.”
While it seems like a new development, DOGE, headed by Musk, was ideated long ago. In September, Trump first mentioned the idea during a speech to the Economic Club of New York, and Musk agreed, stating that the idea “would unlock tremendous prosperity for America.”
While it seems the entire idea for the DOGE department has been completed, Trump mentioned that the department won’t complete its work till June 4, 2026, which coincides with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence.
Trump seems excited and enthusiastic about his appointees and the work they are about to do. However, Musk and Ramaswamy are not the only two Trump has already appointed to public roles.
The president-elect also handpicked Fox News host and Army veteran Pete Hegseth to become the new defense secretary. John Ratcliffe was also selected to head the Central Intelligence Agency.
Former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee was chosen to be the new US ambassador to Israel, while real estate investor Steve Witkoff was picked as special envoy to the Middle East.
