There’s fame and infamy, both different sides of the same coin. Most people would prefer fame over infamy, but some people get to experience both sides in the same lifetime, and Diddy has joined their ranks. The hip-hop superstar is perhaps currently the most popular name in the world. However, it’s not for good reason, and his case has taken an interesting development.
We don’t know whether there is a VIP section for prisoners who were celebrities, but somehow, Diddy, who is currently an alleged sex offender, has been reported to be sharing a prison unit with another infamous person, the founder of FTX and crypto criminal, Sam Bankman-Fried.
While the two are as different as one could imagine, they have started sharing some things. Apart from the prison unit they both share, court filings have shown that Diddy has hired one of Bankman-Fried’s lawyers, Alexandra Shapiro.
The court filings, filed on Monday, also revealed that Diddy is trying to appeal his current imprisonment. He was jailed pending the commencement of his trial and denied a $50 million bail proposal by a judge last month because he could tamper with witnesses or pose a threat to public safety.
Shapiro, the lawyer to Bankman and now Diddy, also made the news some time ago when she filed a 102-page brief on behalf of Bankman in the ongoing appeal for the former FTX boss. She argued that her client’s (Bankman-Fried) 25-year sentence for fraud, money laundering, and conspiracy related to the collapse of FTX and Alameda Research should be overturned because he was “presumed guilty”.
Diddy would now be looking for a similar appeal after he was arrested by the Feds last month for charges including racketeering conspiracy and sex trafficking charges.
The United States Attorney Office Southern District of New York revealed that the Bad Boy Entertainment founder allegedly coerced women into taking part in what they called “freak-off” sex parties. He was also alleged to be a leader in a racketeering conspiracy that engaged in criminal acts, including sex trafficking, forced labor, kidnapping, arson, bribery, and the obstruction of justice.
While neither Diddy nor his new lawyer, Shapiro, have commented on the recent developments, it’s safe to say that all eyes will be on the case and the outcome.
Bankman-Fried, on the other hand, is still awaiting a more permanent prison placement while also contesting his conviction in the Second Circuit Court of Appeals. Shapiro, the star lawyer, now has to find a way to sort out both men. She may have one of the most difficult jobs in the world right now, but at least both of her clients are in the same place, which will save her some time.
