Vitalik Buterin — the genius mind and beating heart of the entire Ethereum ecosystem. In his latest blog post, he lays out metrics to evaluate just how aligned Ethereum-based projects are with the core values of the ecosystem. His goal is to craft a cohesive system, not just a collection of disconnected projects that are being developed in different directions.

The main takeaway: It’s essential that all Ethereum projects work as one big, harmonious ecosystem, rather than as scattered groups with their agendas. Or, as Vitalik puts it, “The primary challenge is making sure that all these projects are, collectively, building something that feels like one Ethereum ecosystem, and not 138 incompatible fiefdoms.”

And he’s not just talking to hear himself speak — he's already sketched out his vision for the changes ahead.

The Perfect Ethereum Concept

To achieve his vision of a unified Ethereum ecosystem, Vitalik Buterin highlights a few key elements. Spoiler alert: they’re all about keeping things open, and compatible.

  • Open Source. Projects should be open for others to review, improve, or poke at. This helps avoid putting all the power into the hands of one developer or company.
  • Compatibility. Projects need to play nice with Ethereum standards like ERC-20. If something new needs to be introduced, it should happen in collaboration with the ecosystem.
  • Decentralization and Security. No single team or server should control the fate of a project. The project should continue to operate if the developers decide to vanish into the mountains. It is also important that the team cannot easily “break” its system.
  • Community Benefit. Success shouldn’t just line the pockets of the creators. A project should contribute to the entire Ethereum community — whether by using ETH as a token or sharing profits with the ecosystem.
  • Benefit to the World. Projects should improve people's lives outside of cryptocurrency, such as improving financial inclusion or helping to solve global problems. Basically, make the world a better place, one smart contract at a time.

Buterin admits this is no small feat, especially with all the different client teams, app developers, researchers, and local communities — each trying to leave their unique fingerprint on Ethereum.

He also stresses how important it is for Ethereum to stay truly neutral:

If alignment means having the right friends, then 'alignment' as a concept has failed.

What Happens Without Buterin?

Vitalik Buterin is the influential voice in the Ethereum ecosystem. His vision, leadership, and intellectual contributions are so significant that many look to him to chart the course forward. Even Charles Hoskinson, founder of Cardano, noted in a recent interview that Buterin’s role is almost too important.

His words echo a common concern:

Everyone looks to Vitalik for the roadmap, they seek inspiration from him because he’s the only one with enough influence to unite people.

But what happens if Buterin disappears? Can a system so dependent on one person adapt and move forward? That question remains, and it underscores the importance of decentralization and self-sufficiency — values Buterin himself champions. Without his unifying presence, can projects stay aligned with Ethereum’s core values and function as a cohesive ecosystem?

These are exactly the questions Vitalik wants to tackle today. By introducing metrics and standards that strengthen Ethereum’s foundation, he aims to ensure that it becomes a truly independent ecosystem. His new "alignment" concept is the first step toward making that goal a reality.
