Move over Ethereum Virtual Machine (EVM), there’s a new player in town—RISC-V. Ethereum’s co-founder, Vitalik Buterin, has just proposed a switch to the open-source instruction set, aiming to supercharge Ethereum’s performance and, surprisingly, make the whole thing simpler. That's right, simpler—almost as simple as Bitcoin, he says. Take that, complex protocols.

In a May 3 blog post, Buterin laid out the plan, claiming that with this shift, Ethereum could get as “beautifully simple” as Bitcoin in just five years. And if you’ve ever marveled at Bitcoin’s no-frills protocol, you know Buterin’s not messing around here.

“Bitcoin transactions and proofs are stunningly simple,” Buterin wrote. “The simplicity makes it one of the best parts of Bitcoin.” Ethereum, on the other hand, could use a little less complexity. Who knew simplicity could be such a revolutionary idea?

RISC-V vs. EVM

So, what exactly is RISC-V, and why is Buterin so excited about it? In short, RISC-V is an open-source instruction set that defines how software communicates with processors. But in Ethereum’s case, it’s a game-changer. Instead of making Ethereum go through a bunch of translation hoops (like the EVM does), RISC-V allows the blockchain to run directly on the execution layer.

This could make some operations up to 100 times faster, all while keeping existing smart contracts intact. Goodbye to those slow, translation-heavy steps!

The Ethereum Virtual Machine, meanwhile, has been custom-built for Ethereum and involves some extra translation, which is like sending a letter through multiple carriers just to get it to the right address. Not exactly fast or efficient.

Buterin also claims that RISC-V is "simpler to reason about," meaning more people could understand it and get involved in the research. Plus, it could help Ethereum cut costs when it comes to building new infrastructure, reducing long-term maintenance fees, and minimizing risks. Fewer moving parts mean less chance for catastrophic bugs or social attacks. It’s like giving Ethereum a tune-up without the headache.

Buterin’s Honest Confession and the Road Ahead

Of course, it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Buterin admits that Ethereum hasn’t exactly been flawless. “Sometimes it’s been my own decisions,” he says, referring to missed opportunities for improvement. But hey, even the best of us have our setbacks.

But let’s be real—the switch to RISC-V could come with some growing pains. It could break backward compatibility, require developers to go back to school, and rely on immature tooling, according to Dominick John, an analyst at Kronos Research. Ethereum’s governance, which involves getting a consensus from all the different stakeholders, is also a logistical nightmare. Coordination, anyone?

Ethereum’s Future: Price Isn’t Everything

Despite these challenges, some still believe Ethereum’s future is bright. “Price isn’t the scoreboard for technological maturity,” said Thad Pinakiewicz, a researcher at Galaxy. “Ethereum isn’t failing because the price is flat. It’s succeeding because it’s laying down infrastructure that others are copying.” So, while the price might not be popping right now, Ethereum’s tech is still paving the way for others to follow.

In the end, if Buterin's RISC-V proposal gains traction, Ethereum might just be able to simplify, speed up, and scale like never before. Now that’s a protocol worth watching.
