The crypto space used to be relatively small and limited to only a small number of people who actually understood it. But now, everyone knows about crypto, from the middle schooler who lives next to you to the grandma you see daily on your way to work. Crypto has become so popular that there are events organized for it worldwide.

We’ve already had some important crypto events through the past months of the year, like the Web3 Dubai held on April 29, the Blockchain Event in February, and Token2049 in Dubai, which literally took place during a flood in Dubai. The turnout of these events shows you the passion people have for crypto.

But good news for crypto heads and nerds: the remaining months in 2024 are still packed with so many crypto events all around the world. From Coachella-sized live events to the more moderate online ones, we’ll take a look at the crypto events taking place this year.

Historic Events In The Crypto Space

FTX Scandal

Until recently, FTX was one of the biggest crypto platforms with numerous exchange listings in the world. But March 28, 2024, was a day that changed the course of FTX forever. On that day, crypto golden boy and CEO of FTX Sam Bankman-Fried was sentenced to 25 years in prison after he was convicted of fraud for stealing at least $10 billion from customers and investors. It’s a day the crypto community will remember for a long time.

    Ethereum’s Birthday

Ethereum, one of crypto’s largest players, was born on July 30, 2015. Since then, Ethereum has come a long way, and this coming July 30th will mark Its ninth birthday. They grow up so fast, right?

      China Banning ICOs

September 2017 was an unforgettable day for the entire crypto community. It was the day crypto lost one of its biggest markets–China. China completely banned initial coin offerings in its territory and crypto trading platforms from converting Chinese legal tender into cryptocurrency. This ban was a huge hit to crypto, and many Chinese trading platforms either shut down or moved out of the country.

        Coinbase Birthday

Coinbase was introduced to the world on June 1, 2012. The massive cryptocurrency exchange platform was founded in June 2012 by Brian Armstrong and Fred Ehrsam and funded with $150,000 by the Y Combinator incubator program. Since then, Coinbase has become the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States, introducing innovative layer 2 solutions like the Base network.

          Binance Birthday

Binance came to the world with a big bang on June 24, 2017, after raising $15 million from its ICO. Today, Binance’s bang is still being felt all across the crypto space.

            The First NFT

NFTs may have just blown up in the late 2010s, but the very first NFT was made way back before that. May 3, 2014, was the day that the NFT space we have today began. Although Jennifer MCcoy made the actual video clip of 179 different frames that became the first NFT, her husband, Kevin MCcoy, and his friend Anil Dash are often credited with creating it.

              Crypto Lawsuits 2024

              Binance

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) had earlier charged Binance with multiple offenses. Binance settled for a $4.3 billion settlement, and Changpeng, its CEO, stepped down and pleaded guilty to a felony charge.

However, 2024 came with a fresh suit from the SEC against Binance. The company has been accused of operating an unregistered exchange that offers illegal securities, such as the BUSD stablecoin, which is a clear breach of securities law.

                Celsius

Things are really heating up for Celsius, as it is currently facing suits from the CTFC and SEC after settling its lawsuit with the Federal Trade Commission. Celsius’s ex-CEO has also been accused of fraud as he waits for his trial sometime in September.

                  Coinbase

Binance and Celsius are not the only platforms the SEC has come for. The SEC has also added Coinbase to its suit list. This time, the SEC has accused Coinbase of failing to register its exchange and illegally offering staking services to U.S. investors. Coinbase is denying the allegations and is set to face the SEC in court.

                    Kraken

Like with the previous crypto companies, the SEC has again accused Kraken of operating a security exchange that it has registered and commingling customer funds.

Kraken also seems interested in a court battle. Its CEO, David Ripley, has publicly said that Kraken does not list securities, and the SEC does not even have a regulatory structure to register compliant crypto firms anyway. It promises to be an interesting legal battle as both parties release the Kraken.

Africa’s top blockchain event, the Blockchain Africa Conference, is being held this October in Jo’burg, SA. It is organized by Bitcoin Events and focuses on everything from the latest innovations to disruptions, DeFi upgrades, and trends such as blockchain gaming within the blockchain and cryptocurrency sectors.

Crypto has come to stay in our world. We see its impact in many aspects of our lives, such as how we spend money and its effects on the climate when we talk about mining activities. To be precise, Bitcoin (BTC) mining emitted over 85.89 metric tons of CO2 from 2020 to 2021.

Non-fungible tokens (NFTs), smart contracts, and other complex dApps also contribute to greenhouse gas emissions as they use energy. So, it’s just a fact; whether we like it or not, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon.

Crypto events like these are where we get to truly explore all the sides of crypto: the good, the bad, and the ugly. These events foster communication and dialogue on using crypto as a force for good in changing the world. You don’t have to be a professional or a crypto nerd to attend and benefit from them. All you need is a passion to contribute to the development of crypto and, of course, an entry ticket.
